Carers Week 2019: Getting Carers Connected

Carers Week 2019: Getting Carers Connected

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

Lanarkshire Carers Centre hosted activities and events throughout Carers Week. Each day had a different theme, highlighting some of the challenges carers face and introducing them to things they can do to help continue caring.

Mental Health Monday

Carers were introduced to our Creative Carers art workshop which gave them the opportunity to take some time out from their caring roles and connect with other carers whilst taking part in a fun activity.

We also hosted a Meditation session in partnership with the Health and Wellness Hub which helped carers learn some techniques to help with their overall health and wellbeing.

We held our annual afternoon tea party in McClymont House in Lanark and finished the day off at SoundRoutes Singers Summer Concert at the Motherwell Concert Hall. As SoundRoutes Singers chosen charity, their Summer concert helped to raise funds for Lanarkshire Carers Centre.

Time Out Tuesday

The Lanarkshire Community Food and Health Partnership facilitated a Healthy Eating workshop where carers learned healthy recipes, the effects that different types of food can have on their overall health and wellbeing and received fruit and a soup pack to take home with them.

Carers also enjoyed our afternoon tea party held in the NCT Centre, Newmains and we also were invited to host a Carer Information Stall in University Hospital: Wishaw and Sainsbury's in Biggar.

Mecca Bingo Hamilton ended the day by hosting our annual Carers Bingo night and we also attended an event at the Scottish Parliament celebrating  the 25th anniversary of Carers Week and the contribution of Scotland’s 759,000 carers. It also marked the 5th anniversary of the Carer Positive scheme, an award for carer supportive employers in Scotland.

Wellness Wednesday

Carers were introduced to Flower Therapy where they learned how flowers can help with the recovery and management of various health conditions, and assist with their overall health and wellbeing. We were also invited to host a Carer Information stall at South Lanarkshire College and Sainsbury's in East Kilbride.

Thinking Thursday

Our International Women's and Polish Carers groups had a fantastic day creating mosaic mirrors, and we also hosted an afternoon tea parties in Cumbernauld and Bellshill. We were also invited to hold a Carer Information Stall at Unversity Hospital: Hairmyres.

Fun Time Friday

Our penultimate day of activities had carers helping to clean up their local green space in Airdrie with a picnic to finish off. We also held a coffee morning in Motherwell and held a Carer Information Stall at the Family Fund information event. We also held our walk around Strathclyde Park for a second year, followed by a light lunch.

Super Saturday

We brought another Carers Week to a close by attending the first pride parade taking place in East Kilbride to celebrate the LGBT community.

A Night at the Races - Summer Dance

On Friday 21 June 2019, we held our Spectacular Sold Out Summer Dance at Hamilton Park Racecourse.

Over 450 carers accessed our events, information stands, tea parties, workshops and activity sessions during Carers Week 2019.

We hope that you had as much fun as us and thank you to all for being a part of it!

We would like to say thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland for awarding Lanarkshire Carers Centre 'Awards for All' funding for a 7 week drama course run in partnership with Tricky Hat Productions. This fund allowed us to showcase the performance of 'The Diamonds' and host our Summer Dance at Hamilton Park Racecourse.

We would also like to say a big 'Thank you' to all of the fantastic local businesses, our independant therapists, members of staff and carers who donated prizes for the Summer Dance Prize Draw.
