Local events held to champion unpaid carers’ rights and support

Lanarkshire Carers is highlighting the invaluable role of unpaid carers and calling for greater investment in their support as they mark Carers Rights Day on Thursday 20 November 2025.

As Scotland approaches the Scottish Parliament Election in May 2026, Lanarkshire Carers stresses the importance of ensuring unpaid carers of all ages—now and in the future—receive the rights and support they both need and deserve. Scotland’s unpaid carers make an essential contribution valued at £15.9 billion annually. According to the 2022 Census, nearly 88,000 Lanarkshire residents identify as carers, though the true number is likely much higher due to many ‘hidden’ carers who may not recognise themselves as such or are unaware of their rights and available support. Carers Rights Day is a reminder of the urgent need for rights-based support to safeguard carers’ own health and wellbeing.

To mark the day, Lanarkshire Carers invited their Full Members to two festive-themed cafés, creating relaxed spaces where carers could connect with one another. The organisation also participated in a roundtable event on Carer Poverty at the Scottish Parliament, chaired by Carol Mochan MSP.

In addition, local elected representatives were invited to visit Lanarkshire Carers as part of an Elected Members Open Doors Day. Councillors Helena Gray, Barry McCulloch and Richard Sullivan from North Lanarkshire Council met with staff, board members and carers.

They heard firsthand experiences, and discussed key improvements that could support the estimated 800,000 unpaid carers across Scotland who give their time and energy to care for family members and friends. During their visit, elected members were also asked to commit to actions within the Carers Manifesto ahead of the 2026 elections, helping strengthen support for unpaid carers.

These events provided an important platform for unpaid carers to highlight the pressing issues they face—including financial insecurity and limited access to breaks—and to reinforce the need for sustained funding for local carer organisations that deliver vital, lifeline services.

Unpaid carers are encouraging all decision makers attending these events to take a stand on several key policy areas, including commitments to champion improved support, ensure carers can stay well, and achieve financial security.
