Dysregulation and Communication

Dysregulation and Communication
In Person Course

This informative and practical training session explores how sensory experiences and nervous system regulation influence behaviour and communication in everyday care settings. It is particularly relevant for carers who support individuals who may experience heightened stress responses, emotional dysregulation, or sensory sensitivities.

Understanding that behaviour is often a form of communication, this session will help carers develop a deeper awareness of how individuals respond to their environment and how feelings of safety, comfort, and regulation play a key role in effective interaction.

The training will focus on building knowledge and confidence in recognising signs of dysregulation and responding in a calm, supportive, and person-centred way. Participants will be introduced to simple, practical approaches that can help reduce distress, promote a sense of safety, and improve communication.

During the session, participants will:

  • Gain a clearer understanding of the nervous system and how it affects behaviour and emotional responses
  • Explore how sensory processing can impact communication, reactions, and daily interactions
  • Learn to recognise signs of dysregulation and stress in those they care for
  • Understand the importance of creating a safe, calm, and supportive environment as a foundation for communication
  • Develop practical strategies to support regulation and reduce distress
  • Build confidence in responding to challenging situations in a more effective and compassionate way

The session will be delivered in a supportive and accessible format, with opportunities for reflection and discussion. It aims to equip carers with realistic, easy-to-apply techniques that can make a positive difference in everyday caring situations.

By the end of the training, participants will have a greater understanding of the link between regulation and communication, along with practical tools to support those they care for in feeling safer, more understood, and better able to communicate their needs.
