Training Opportunities

Lanarkshire Carers training programme covers a range of topics to help carers feel confident in their caring role and look after their own health and wellbeing. When someone’s caring role is new, our Steps of Caring Programme provides useful information and helpful contacts. Our training programme provides a range of condition specific sessions and topics that address issues identified by carers throughout the caring journey. When a caring role changes or ends our Moving Forward from Caring Programme supports carers to deal with loss and change and move on to services better placed to meet their needs.

The courses we deliver are listed below. You can also sign up to our mailing list and we will contact you when further training opportunities become available.

At Lanarkshire Carers, we try our very best to ensure that carers get access to as much information and training opportunities as possible to help them in their caring role.

We provide free of charge training courses to ensure that no carer will ever be unable to attend due to financial reasons. However, there is a cost to us and for some courses it can be considerable. We understand that as carers, something can arise which would prevent you from attending a pre-registered course.

If you are unable to attend please contact us as soon as possible. Many of these courses have a waiting list and unless we know, we are unable to offer your place to someone else.

A new series of mindfulness sessions with a fresh style for those who enjoy the personal aspects of Martin’s experience and how they have impacted his life. These sessions have a more personal, ‘storytelling’ theme, which will also give the group key lessons about mindfulness and their own mental health and well-being.

Session 2 - Gratitude & kindness - How a story of hardship taught me the key lessons that I’ve lived my life by

I knew bits and pieces about my dad’s life but it was only following his illness that I became aware of the full details. My determination to get him to tell the harrowing story of his family, who were deported to Soviet labour camps by Stalin in 1940, taught me a lesson about gratitude and kindness that has stayed with me through my life and made me who I am.

Session 3 - Key Life Changing Lessons I’ve Learned from Buddha

After buying my first book in a near frazzled state, I’ve since studied mindfulness, Buddhism and the mind for over 20 years.  What The Buddha Taught by Sri Lankan monk Walpola Sri Rahula is one of my favourite books. I must’ve read this book 50 times or more.  I’ll tell you what I’ve learned from this book and how it’s helped me achieve peace of mind.

Session 4 - A Simpler Life

Simplifying my life has undoubtedly had a huge benefit on my well-being and the peace of mind I enjoy. American philosopher and naturalist Henry David Thoreau’s inspiring work Walden is the greatest hymn to nature and simple living ever written. This book can change your life dramatically, as it did mine. Hear what I learned from his wisdom.

Session 5 - Towards a Mindful Society - My top lessons for a mindful life

It’s been my great privilege to have been teaching mindfulness since 2004. My book Towards a Mindful Society is a collection of my thoughts, my experiences and the lessons I’ve learnt throughout that time. Through a series of key quotes from the book, I want to share my top mindfulness lessons with you.

Session 6 - Why reflecting on death helps us relish life

Death is still a very uncomfortable subject for most of us. My suicide-prevention work has been life changing for me. I’ve seen first-hand the devastation suicide can cause, but it’s also taught me a key lesson on the beauty and preciousness of life. I’ll share this with you so that you can make the most of each moment and also cope with bereavement should you need to.

Session 7 - My mindful day

For me mindfulness is a way of life. From my first waking moment each day, to falling asleep at night, I try to be in the present as much as I can. I’ll tell you about my mindful day and I hope it can inspire you towards living mindfully too.

Session 8 - My practice

Mindful practice is personal and what works for some may not work for others. That said, we can all undoubtedly learn from each other. I’ll tell you what works for me and you can experiment to find the right methods for your own life.

Session 9 - Art and creativity for wellbeing

Expressing myself through poetry, art and music has been important to my peace of mind. Hear how mindfulness and creativity are closely linked and how being creative is good for your mental health and well-being.

Session 10 - My Journey to Greater Peace of Mind: Keep on learning

When I first learned mindfulness, over twenty years ago, I was a product of our mainstream education system, through university, and also business leadership development. In those fields you learned things, felt you knew it, and then applied it. What I have learned through mindfulness, and am still learning, is that your mind changes as you practice it, so your practice constantly evolves and you have to continually adapt. I'll explain this latest part of my journey with you.

We now know that sensory differences are extremely common in those on the autism spectrum; so much so sensory differences are now part of the diagnostic profile. During this session we look more closely at sensory differences. We begin by identifying our 8 (not 5) sensory systems and demonstrate how these sensory systems might be different in the autistic population. We will discuss how to begin to identify a person’s sensory differences with them and how you can then support them to make everyday life less stressful.
